This excursion is suitable also for those with no previous experience of river trekking. The Alcantara is a 53 km long river located in eastern Sicily. It has its source on the south side of Monti Nebrodi at about 1,400 m and its mouth in the Ionian Sea at Capo Schiso in Giardini-Naxos. Several thousand years ago, the river bed was blocked by a lava flow from Mount Etna. As the lava was cooled by the water, it crystallized in the form of columns. Over time, the river has naturally eroded a channel through these columns, giving rise to the impressive gorges and ravines known as the Alcantara Gorges (Gole dell’Alcantara, next to Francavilla di Sicilia), where the Peloritani mountains end and our adventure begins!Details
This activity consists of walking upriver, toward the river’s source. You will have the opportunity to admire magnificent formations of basaltic lava flows and cones, walls 30 meters high, and a canyon of volcanic rocks 800 meters long. We will have great fun with the features created by the combination of rock and water!

Itinerary
The meeting point is at the Agriturismo Valle Alcantara, 750 meters from the entrance to the Alcantara Gorges.
We will use a wetsuit, helmet, and life jacket to enjoy a fully safe excursion and exciting adventure
The excursion begins with us walking upriver, going up the canyon for about 800 meters; while hiking these incredible rock formations of lava flows, we will climb and cross small rapids upstream to reach Venus Pool, a naturally formed swimming pool in an incredibly beautiful setting.
After having reached Venus Pool, we will go back following the river’s current through the canyon for about 1 km, surrounded by a breath-taking view of high and wide basaltic rocks. We will cross the delightful waters of the ponds created within the gorges, and enjoy every aspect of this picturesque landscape!
