River trekking in the Alcantara Gorge
The Alcantara River is 53 km long and originates from Monti Nebrodi. Its mouth is in the Ionian Sea at Capo Schiso in Giardini-Naxos. Thousands of years ago, a lava flow from Mount Etna blocked the river bed. As the lava cooled down in contact with the water, it solidified into columns. Over time, the river has eroded a channel through these columns, creating the stunning Alcantara Gorges (Gole dell’Alcantara) next to Francavilla di Sicilia. Our adventure begins where the Peloritani mountains end!

The river trekking excursion to the Alcantara Gorges is an experience to be fully enjoyed, a truly alternative way to experience the Alcantara River Park. The Alcantara River is 53 km long and is located in eastern Sicily. It rises in the Nebrodi Mountains at approximately 1,400 m and flows into the Ionian Sea near Giardini Naxos. The excursion we will undertake will be an unforgettable adventure, one that will remain in your heart and memory forever. River trekking takes place in an enchanting landscape and is ideal for those seeking a first approach to adventure in close contact with nature, for those who want to embark on a different experience, but without fear or danger. You will walk through the water, ascend small rapids, and climb ancient rocks, always in complete safety thanks to our expert guides.
Information
The excursion lasts approximately 2 hours, and costs €39 per person. The river trek takes place roughly from May to October. It’s recommended to wear a swimsuit and bring sunscreen.

Excursion program and itinerary:
The meeting point is at the Alcantara Valley, 750 meters from the entrance to the Gorges. Here, you’ll begin getting dressed: we’ll provide you with a special wetsuit, a pair of overalls and boots specifically designed for river trekking. We’ll also provide you with a helmet and life jacket; all you have to worry about is letting yourself go.
The river excursion to the Alcantara Gorges consists of an upriver excursion that will allow us to discover up close the wonders of this enchanted valley with its infinite history stretching back so far, with the formation of this basalt canyon that makes the landscape breathtaking and unparalleled. In the water, passing waterfalls and climbing small rock faces, we will reach the great Alcantara Canyon. Here you can admire walls approximately 30 meters high, along a route mostly 4 meters wide and 800 meters long: the sensation will be unique and the spectacle guaranteed.
During our journey, once we enter the canyon, we’ll have to overcome small waterfalls or climb rocks to move forward, but don’t worry, our guides will be there to make everything as fun and safe as possible.

Yes, tours to the Alcantara Gorges are generally suitable for everyone. Some activities, such as simple access to the park, do not require particular physical preparation. For river routes or more adventurous experiences, good mobility is recommended.
Not always mandatory, but for activities involving entering the river, it is recommended to feel comfortable in the water. For river excursions, proper instructions and equipment are provided.
We recommend bringing a swimsuit, towel, water shoes or sports shoes that can get wet, a dry change of clothes, and sunscreen during the summer months.
In case of adverse weather conditions or high river levels, tours may be cancelled or postponed. A rescheduling option is usually offered. If the tour is cancelled, since payment is made on site, you will not lose anything.
