Perfect day of exploring volcanoes and wines! If you’re looking to explore the volcanic wonders of Etna, look no further! Our trip to the craters and ice caves was absolutely top-notch. A huge shout-out to our guide, Gianni. Not only is he a walking encyclopedia of volcanic knowledge, but he also possesses the secret superpower of navigating those tiny, winding Sicilian roads with absolute ease. I’m pretty sure he could drive a tour bus through a needle’s eye! The day was capped off perfectly with some incredible wine tasting. If you want a mix of adventure, education, and delicious wine—all while feeling completely safe despite the road width—book this tour. Simply fantastic!"

Very informative tour and lots of lunch and wine Our guide Lucas was charming, informative and really interesting to listen to. We learnt so much about the volcano, its history, vegetation and geology, within a warm friendly group. We climbed up the lava flow to view craters and went down into a lava tube. Finally we had a wine tasting with very free flowing wine and a great lunch. A fantastic day - would highly recommend.

Great experience This tour beat expectations. The hike on the slopes of Etna was beautiful and informative - especially as we could hear the volcano erupting during the day (though no lava visible on the northern slopes). Our guide, Lucas, was knowledgeable and very personable, taking photos of all 3 couples at several scenic stops. The Gambino winery was also high quality - delicious wines and food, with generous pours and friendly service. Our tour was only 6 people in total. A great way to spend the day near Taormina.

Program and route details:

We’ll pick you up in the morning directly from your accommodation or at a designated meeting point in the Taormina, Giardini Naxos, and surrounding areas. For more distant locations, such as Catania, you can arrange the starting point directly with your guide.

The transfer will be by jeep or minivan to the tour starting point, the Clan dei Ragazzi refuge, at an altitude of 1,500 meters on the northern slopes of Etna.

From here, the adventure begins along the spectacular Pista Altomontana, a panoramic route that winds for 22 km through the Etna Park, with an elevation gain of approximately 500 meters. The tour lasts approximately 4 hours and takes place among lava landscapes, birch forests, and unique natural views.

The route includes a fascinating stop at the Palombe Cave or the Lamponi Cave, two of Etna’s most spectacular lava flow tunnels. These geological formations tell the millennia-old story of eruptions and are an unmissable experience for nature and geology lovers.

Halfway through, we’ll make a short stop at the Timparossa Refuge, nestled in a breathtaking landscape. It’s the perfect time to relax, have a drink, eat a packed lunch, and take some memorable photos overlooking the volcano.

After completing the loop, we’ll return to the starting point at Clan dei Ragazzi, where you can relax in a chalet surrounded by nature. Here, a refreshing drink or a traditional Sicilian arancini awaits, to round off your adventure in style.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most Etna tours are designed to be accessible to people with a normal level of fitness. Some experiences, such as summit crater trekking, quad tours, or bike excursions, may require greater physical effort. It is always recommended to read the details of each specific tour or request information before booking.

No specific experience is required for most activities. Guides always provide instructions and assistance. For quad, bike, or e-bike tours, basic familiarity with the vehicle is required.

Many excursions are also suitable for children, but the minimum age may vary depending on the type of activity (for example quad tours or high-altitude trekking). It is advisable to always communicate the children’s age at the time of booking.

The price generally includes an expert guide and, depending on the tour, any necessary technical equipment (such as helmets, trekking poles, snowshoes, or vehicles). Transfer service from Taormina is also included in the price.

Comfortable, sporty clothing is recommended, preferably in layers. Temperatures on Etna can be lower than along the coast, especially at higher altitudes. Closed trekking or sports shoes, a windproof jacket, and warm clothing in winter are recommended.

If the weather conditions are particularly adverse (heavy storms, strong winds, or unsafe mountain conditions), tours may be cancelled or postponed. In such cases, a rescheduling option is usually offered. If the tour is cancelled, since payment is made on site, you will not lose anything.
