On the eastern coast of Sicily – a short journey from the Strait of Messina – lies Mt. Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe and UNESCO World Heritage. This tour will guide you through lava fields, spectacular views, and Etna’s breathtaking landscape. Our professional and experienced guides will bring you to Etna’s summit craters to see the volcano up close.
We’ll provide you with the necessary equipment: helmets, trekking poles, and/or snowshoes. We recommend wearing:
The adventure begins early in the morning (between 7:30 and 8:00 am), with pickup from your accommodation in Taormina or Giardini Naxos. Aboard a minivan, we’ll head to the Rifugio Sapienza, located at an altitude of 1,900 meters. From there, we’ll take the cable car up to 2,500 meters, then ascend even higher in special off-road vehicles to 2,900 meters, the starting point of our trek.
Under the expert guidance of our volcanologists, we’ll traverse a landscape of recent lava flows, active craters, and spectacular gas emissions. Once we reach the summit, we’ll be able to observe the impressive volcanic activity up close and enjoy incredible views that, on clear days, extend all the way to the Aeolian Islands.
This trek is an unforgettable experience for those who love adventure and want to experience the power of an active volcano up close!
The tour lasts approximately 8 hours and costs €159 per person, payable on-site. The price includes minivan transportation, tickets for the Etna cable car and off-road vehicles, the accompaniment of certified guides, and the rental of necessary equipment, such as helmets and trekking poles.
The excursion to the summit craters of Etna is available from April to November and is conducted in Italian and English. Since it is a challenging trek, it is recommended for hikers in good physical shape. The elevation gain of approximately 400 meters and variable weather conditions make the experience particularly adventurous.
The excursion is not suitable for people with cardiovascular problems, severe hypertension, anxiety, or pregnant women. In case of inclement weather, the tour may be canceled or postponed.

We’ll pick you up at 7:30/8:00 am at the agreed-upon meeting point in Taormina, Giardini Naxos, or—if necessary—Catania, subject to prior arrangement of the meeting time and location. At 9:30 am, we’ll arrive at the Rifugio Sapienza, located at 1,900 meters above sea level.
From the Sapienza Refuge, we’ll begin the actual climb: we’ll take the cable car up to an altitude of 2,600 meters, and from there we’ll continue in a 4×4 jeep up to 2,900 meters, the starting point of the trek.
Accompanied by Volcanological Guides, we’ll embark on a challenging trek lasting approximately three hours over lava terrain and a steep slope. The summit craters represent the epicenter of Etna’s volcanic activity: reaching them is a breathtaking experience, both for the effort and for the breathtaking view from the summit.
The descent will last about two hours and will cross a picturesque sandy path that offers spectacular views of the lava flows of recent years. A constantly evolving landscape, sculpted by the force of the volcano.
At the end of the excursion, we’ll begin the return journey: around 4:00 PM, you’ll be back at your accommodation, with an unforgettable experience in your eyes and hearts.

Most Etna tours are designed to be accessible to people with a normal level of fitness. Some experiences, such as summit crater trekking, quad tours, or bike excursions, may require greater physical effort. It is always recommended to read the details of each specific tour or request information before booking.
No specific experience is required for most activities. Guides always provide instructions and assistance. For quad, bike, or e-bike tours, basic familiarity with the vehicle is required.
Many excursions are also suitable for children, but the minimum age may vary depending on the type of activity (for example quad tours or high-altitude trekking). It is advisable to always communicate the children’s age at the time of booking.
The price generally includes an expert guide and, depending on the tour, any necessary technical equipment (such as helmets, trekking poles, snowshoes, or vehicles). Transfer service from Taormina is also included in the price.
Comfortable, sporty clothing is recommended, preferably in layers. Temperatures on Etna can be lower than along the coast, especially at higher altitudes. Closed trekking or sports shoes, a windproof jacket, and warm clothing in winter are recommended.
If the weather conditions are particularly adverse (heavy storms, strong winds, or unsafe mountain conditions), tours may be cancelled or postponed. In such cases, a rescheduling option is usually offered. If the tour is cancelled, since payment is made on site, you will not lose anything.
